Take a Breath, Take the Stage
I’ll let you in on a little secret: the very first time I sang a solo in front of a large audience, I held my breath so tightly before that opening phrase that I nearly blacked out. My knees buckled, my vision blurred, and I squeaked out a note that was more mouse than music.
Why? Because I thought breath was just…breath. Something automatic, something my body would figure out for me while I worried about the high notes and stage lights. Wrong. So wrong.
Breath is not just oxygen—it’s the foundation of every word, every note, every ounce of presence you bring to an audience. Without it, you’re a balloon without air, a sparkler without spark.
Why Breath Matters More Than You Think
Here’s the truth: whether you’re singing, speaking, or just trying not to lose your cool before a big presentation, breath is your built-in power source.
• It fuels your voice. (Try speaking on an empty breath—you’ll sound like a deflating tire.)
• It calms your nerves. (Deep breathing triggers your body’s relaxation response.)
• It creates connection. (An audience can feel when you’re grounded in your breath versus gasping like a goldfish on land.)
Breath is the performer’s secret weapon. And the best part? You already have it. No extra gear required.
A Quick Exercise: The One-Minute Reset
Want to test it right now? Here’s a favorite from my book, BREATH: The Singer’s Power.
1. Inhale gently through your nose for a count of 4.
2. Hold for 4.
3. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6.
4. Repeat twice.
Notice anything? Your shoulders drop. Your thoughts stop racing. Your voice feels steadier. That’s breath in action—resetting your body and mind so you can walk onstage (or into a boardroom, or even a tough conversation) with presence instead of panic.
A Story from the Stage
I once coached a speaker who was brilliant but terrified. Her sentences ran together, her voice cracked, and by the end of a five-minute talk, she was beet red and dizzy.
We didn’t fix her content. We didn’t drill her delivery. We fixed her breath. Once she learned to pause, inhale, and release, her voice found resonance, her pacing improved, and her confidence skyrocketed. The transformation wasn’t magic—it was biology.
I call this breath performance fuel. When you run out of fuel, the whole vehicle sputters. When you breathe with intention, you go from clunky jalopy to sleek race car.
Breath Is the First Step into The Flow Zone
This book isn’t just about how to take a big gulp of air. It’s about learning to use your breath as a mindful tool—for confidence, power, and connection.
And it’s the very first piece of my larger formula:
Breath + Energy + Intention = The Flow Zone
Without breath, energy scatters. Without breath, intention falls flat. Breath is the anchor, the spark, and the starting line.
